'If they're not a nice person you don't need them in your life.'

'People are throwing the word 'narcissist' around like confetti at the moment.'

‘For 40 years, I thought it was my fault.’

Being around a narcissist can take a toll on anybody, but how would it affect you if your mother was one?

In a series called ‘Narcissistic Mothers’ for BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, I interviewed three women.

Charlotte* and Louise* are sisters. They remember their mother differently. One had a revelation in therapy that their mother was a narcissist, and the realisation has changed her life. The other is more cautious - she knows their mum could be 'volatile', but she has empathy for her mother and is inclined to move on with her life.

Scarlett* says drama over a takeaway was the catalyst she needed to cut her mum off. She has spent the last two years in therapy trying to figure out how to live with her decision. She has no regrets.

Louise* and Edward* talk openly about the devastating impact it has had on their relationship and their family.

Narcissist Mothers

I cannot thank you enough for highlighting this issue. It has felt for years like a taboo subject to me, thank you, thank you thank you!
