Do Black Dolls Matter?

Ama Gueye is passionate about ensuring children have access to black dolls. She is founder of Operation Sankofa which organises the Black Dolls expo in Tottenham Green, London.

I had a black doll when I was a child. It’s been decades since I played with Susie- only her head has survived. Back then I didn’t think much of her existence. I only remember my mum refusing to buy me Barbie dolls.

So it was interesting to speak to people who go out of their way to sell or buy dolls of colour. I also discovered all the little things that make it so important for them and their children to own a black doll.
