MMA & Mental Health

“Ena! Can you please put a 10 minute feature together about Mixed Martial Arts? It’s in Manchester.”

“Yeah, no problem. Am I allowed to get active and get involved?’

“Yes, you can. I’ve done the risk assessment. Lots of sound, movement and don’t hurt anyone please.”

Jay Cahill left her job as a deputy head teacher to set up a community gym in Manchester. Her passion is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu which is a submission grappling full contact martial arts.

I visited the gym to hear about the women who are benefiting from her classes and how it is helping their mental health. I did get lots of action and sounds (as requested). But I also tapped into people’s stories and their emotional journeys that have led them to take solace in Jay’s place.

I told Jay I was afraid I might hurt her. She said not to worry. I said OK.

Getting the atmos sounds
